Brangman brothers not guilty of wounding
A jury has found two brothers not guilty of a stabbing attack against carpenter Clifton Anderson.
Melvin Brangman, 47, was cleared of wounding with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, while his brother Michael Brangman, 45, was found not guilty of being an accessory to the crime after the fact.
The jury declared them not guilty by a majority verdict of ten to two, and both men were discharged.
Prosecutors had alleged that Melvin Brangman carried out the attack, and claimed that Michael Brangman helped his brother clean the scene of blood.
During the trial, the jury heard from prosecutors that Mr Anderson, a 51-year-old carpenter, showed up at the brothers’ home in Sandys to ask for money he was owed.
However instead of being paid, Mr Anderson said the elder brother approached him with a sharp knife and slashed his neck.
He testified that in the wake of the attack he fled the house and tried to hail down help from passing motorists.
He was later taken to hospital where he was treated and remained for two weeks.
Officers saw the defendants in their yard after the attack, standing near a patch of concrete that was wet and smelt of bleach.
However Melvin Brangman told jurors that Mr Anderson chased him around the garden before falling on top of him.
Michael Brangman meanwhile told police that he had used a hose to water banana plants and wash away dog urine, and that he had not seen Mr Anderson on the day of the incident.
Their cousin, Paul Bascome, told jurors that Mr Anderson had approached him after the incident, telling him to instruct the defendants that he would drop the case for $10,000.
