Hotel objects to plan for four-storey office
with a four-storey office and apartment building has been submitted to the Development Applications Board.
But next-door neighbour Waterloo House is objecting to the plan by Overbay Investments Ltd.
Pending a decision by the Board, the company hopes to begin construction this summer.
Designs for the proposed development were submitted by architects Onions, Bouchard & McCulloch in April. Architect Mr. Ted Wood said of the project: "I feel we have succeeded in keeping the Bermuda architectural character as much as possible in our plans. It has a cottage feel to it. Another important feature we've achieved is to retain the landscaping on the street frontage.
"We do believe the current building is in extremely poor structural and physical shape. We've been very cooperative with the Planning Department and the Historic Buildings Advisory Committee.'' Mr. George Wardman, general manager of Waterloo House, has expressed concern over the plans.
In a letter to the Board, he said he was "worried about the noise, dust, dirt and general inconvenience from a project so close to guest accommodation.'' He also pointed out that the new building would be a full-storey higher than the existing structure.
