Clubbing together to mark remembrance day
The African Diaspora Heritage Trail hosted a slew of activities this past week in commemoration of the United Nations Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
This UN commemoration is about celebrating the positive impact that people of African descent across the diaspora have had on the world.
The theme this year is “Leadership through Sports”, the role of sports in developing community leaders.
The week commenced with the fifth Annual Day of Remembrance service at Cobbs Hill Methodist Church, followed by an Annual Day of Remembrance lecture at St George’s Cricket Club on Wednesday last week.
The panellists were Kimberley Jackson, Jaymo Durham, Lou Matthews, Stephen Coddington and Llewellyn Simmons, who challenged the audience’s thinking about the role of sports and sports organisations in developing community leaders.
Last Saturday, ADHT hosted the Louis Kid Corbin Memorial Golf Tournament at the Ocean View Golf Club.
Maxine Esdaille, chairwoman of African Diaspora Heritage Trail, told us: “This golf club, started by Bermudians of African descent, was the first Bermuda golf club which allowed all persons to play.
“The tournament is in honour of all the golfers of the era that broke the colour barrier in golf in Bermuda and the US.”
In honour of Mr Corbin and other golfers of his era, each of the 11 teams was named after a golfer of the era. Team names included the Alora and Frank Rabain team, which was captained by Katyna Rabain, daughter of Alora and Frank Rabain; the George and Earl Lowe team, which was captained by Genevieve Bradley, great-granddaughter of George Lowe, founder of the Ocean View Golf Club; and the Louis “Kid” Corbin team captained by John Richardson, cousin of Louis “Kid” Corbin.
The spirit of the trailblazers was evident as the scores were very competitive, probably spurred on by the participation of the many family members of the trailblazers who played in the tournament.
Also in attendance at the tournament were Canterbury Corbin and George Dowling, who are both descendants of the Corbin family.
