Harvey grabs two more golds

Golden girl: Bermuda's Harvey

Emma Harvey continued her superb showing at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Martinique yesterday.

Harvey, 14, added to the two gold medals she won on Tuesday, the opening day of the competition, with two more first-place finishes to take her tally to four golds.

Competing in the 13-to-14 age division, Harvey won the 100 backstroke in a time of 1min 8.95sec before finishing first in the 50-metres butterfly in 28.45. She also won the 400 medley fast preliminary in 5:21.72.

Also among the medals yesterday was Shannon Hassell who won gold in the 100 backstroke in the 15-to-17 age division in 1:08.95, and Logan Watson-Brown who came first in the women’s 200 freestyle in 2:18.97.

Madelyn Moore, 15, was unable to add to the gold she won on Tuesday in the 50 backstroke, finishing fourth in the 50 butterfly in 29.68.

Also in action in yesterday’s finals were Jack Harvey in the 11-to-12 100 backstroke, finishing eighth in a time of 1:12.59 and Watson-Brown, competing in the 11-to-12 category, who placed sixth in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.09.

Jesse Washington finished eighth in the 15-to-17 50 butterfly in 26.19 and sixth in the 200 freestyle 2:00.14.

Meanwhile, Brian Desmond placed eighth in the 11-to-12 200 freestyle in 2:18.93.

Bermuda, coached by Ben Smith, have sent an 11-member team to Martinique. Harvey and Moore won six medals each from Barbados last year when the 17-member team won 24 medals, two more than the previous year in Aruba.
