Mom Marsha Jones said she wished people had listened to her warnings of future heartache when her son Shaundae was shot dead eight years ago.About 50 family and friends held a candlelit vigil to honour Shaundae at the Rubber Tree in Warwick last night just metres from where the 20-year-old is buried.Ms Jones said it was “bitter sweet” to see so many people paying tribute to her son, but she wished she could have stopped “more families going through the same pain.”Shaundae was shot and killed as he left Club Malabar in Dockyard on April 27, 2003. It shocked the community as it was one of the first gun murders in Bermuda’s history.The vigil was organised by Keona Smith, cousin of another murder victim, Colford Ferguson, who was killed in Sandys on February 4. Ms Smith plans to host similar ceremonies for other shooting victims through the course of the year.Ms Jones said: “I’m happy so many people showed up to remember my son after so many years.“As a mom, it really touches your heart that people still think about him. I like to think that he’s looking down the hill at us from the graveyard.”But Ms Jones said she had been unable to do anything to stop the increasing tide of gun violence across our community. Since her son’s murder, 17 others have lost their lives in shootings in Bermuda. Ms Jones said: “It’s really, really sad that Bermuda has come to this.“When Shaundae first got shot I was crying out to the community. I kept saying if we don’t get a hold of the situation, it’s going to keep happening.“Now there have been murder after murder and the suffering continues. I really feel for the other families.”The candlelit vigil saw the large gathering of friends and family lighting candles, singing and giving tributes to remember Shaundae.
