Port Royal gets last laugh in two-day dinghy regatta
Sunday and Monday as Port Royal bounced back from last placings, equipment problems and a rule infringement to win the final race of the two-day programme hosted by the Sandys Boat Club. In round robin match racing on Sunday for the Bermuda Maritime Museum Trophy, Contest , skippered by Andreas Lewin, finished first with four wins and a loss from five matches. There was a three-way tie for second place, shared by Challenger which was skippered by Hugh Watlington on Sunday in the absence of Paul Fisher, Martin Siese's Echo and Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club's Elizabeth with William White at the helm. All three boats had three wins and two losses. Allan Powell in Victory recorded two wins and three losses while Brett Wright's Port Royal placed last in three races and did not compete in the last two because of equipment problems. However, Port Royal came back strongly in the second race on Monday, taking an early lead and going on to win the Cambridge Bowl. Contest was second, Challenger third, Elizabeth fourth, Victory fifth and Echo sixth. In Monday's first race, for the Gilbert Bowl, Paul Fisher returned to the helm of Challenger and led his team to first place. Second was Victory while Echo and Contest were third and fourth respectively. Port Royal withdrew after a rule infringement, but they were rewarded for their determination in the afternoon as they capped what was a weekend of mixed fortunes with a piece of silverware.
Racing continues this Sunday with the AS Cooper Cup going up for grabs in the 2.00 event and the White's Island Cup being contested at 4.00. Depending on the wind direction the races will be held in Granaway Deep or Hamilton Harbour.
