won them the day during the Bermuda Fitted Dinghy season-opener in the Granaway Deep.

The two races, hosted by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, saw Contest win the opening race in 15-knot breezes. Contest , skippered by Andreas Lewin, showed why she is still the boat to beat despite a strong challenge by Peter Bromby and his crew in Challenger on the first windward leg. Both boats rounded the first windward mark in quick succession with Contest slightly ahead. However, Bromby's prowess alone was not enough to overcome Contest 's seasoned crew who managed to quickly hoist a monster spinnaker which allowed her to surge ahead.

Contest built on her lead while Bromby had to ward off a challenge for second place mounted by Port Royal and Elizabeth .

With the breeze picking up slightly for the second race, Will White and his Port Royal crew took the more conservative tack and put up their smallest number three rig. As the race got underway it was unclear whether White's decision would pay off.

It was not smooth sailing for Port Royal until the fourth windward leg, after which the race was theirs. The second windward leg saw a small pile-up at the top mark.

Lewin would again draw from the experience of his Contest crew and ordered a bear away spinnaker set using the large chute. Contest surged into first place, the huge pressure of the giant sail splintering a spinnaker pole in the process.

A blown jib halyard halfway up the third beat would end Contest 's bid for a double, however, and it would be Malcolm Smith in Elizabeth and Challenger who chased Port Royal .

Contest , four-time Coronation Cup winners and chasing a fifth straight triumph, trail Port Royal by one point in the standings.
