Man bailed after being charged with wounding another man
A Smith's man who allegedly caused another man grievous bodily harm was ordered to appear back in Magistrates' Court on September 4.
Tyler Preston Abbott, 20, of Church Dale, was not required to enter a plea, seeing that the case is indictable and must be heard in Supreme Court before a judge and jury.
It is alleged that Abbott, with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, unlawfully wounded Daniel Poe, on August 10 while in Hamilton. Abbott, represented by Charles Richardson, was released on $10,000 bail with one surety.
The court also heard that he also had several traffic offences on his record, namely riding an unlicensed motorbike, with no third party insurance and no drivers' license on August 15 at Knapton Hill in Smith's. He was fined $250, $1,000 and $100 for those offences. And ordered to pay them immediately.
Abandoned ATM card gave thief opportunity
A Devonshire woman who stole $400 from a man's ATM account was fined yesterday in Magistrates' Court.
Rukiya Shadae Smith, 22, of Tribe Road, pleaded guilty to withdrawing two amounts of $200 from Kenneth Dill's Butterfield Bank account on June 24.
The court heard that Mr. Dill attended Modern Mart, in Paget, and operated a bank ATM machine. There was a line behind him and he walked away from the machine before the transaction was complete. The next person in line, Smith, had a window of a five seconds to activate his account and did so by taking out two sets of $200.
The theft was discovered when Mr. Dill looked at his bank statement and noticed money had been taken without his permission.
Cameras in the area showed Smith operating the ATM. She was subsequently arrested and during a tape interview admitted the offence to Police. Days later, she apologised to Mr. Dill and returned the money, the court heard.
During her account yesterday in court, Smith called the circumstances a "misunderstanding". She claimed that she approached the machine and a yes or no option popped up.
She then proceeded to take out $400, the same amount that she withdraws every Friday. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined her $100 for each withdrawal and gave her until September 21 to pay.
"You're working?" he asked Smith. "And you understand (now) how these machines work?"

In court yesterday Steede, assisted by duty counsel Michelle St. Jane, admitted to the theft, but alleged she only stole $3,200 from her former employers and thereby entered a not guilty plea.
She also told the court that $5,000 of her pay was withheld from her by the bank.
Steede is set to appear back in court on October 1 and was released on $2,000 bail, with one surety.
