Eagles continue push for promotion
BAA 0 Somerset Eagles 1
Missed chances in the first half came back to haunt BAA tonight as Somerset Eagles, the First Division joint leaders, scored a late winner to maintain their push for promotion at Goose Gosling Field.
Substitutes Marlon Rojas and Tristan Smith combined to produce the winning goal in the 74th minute, player-coach Rojas on the field for just two minutes when he supplied the cross into the six-yard box for Smith to sidefoot home.
BAA, in third and desperate to close the gap on the leaders, were unlucky to be trailing as they were the better team in the first half, hitting the framework three times with Eagles struggling to match them. A BAA effort grazed the outside of the base of the post in the opening minutes before Laquan Thomas sidefooted against the bar from inside the six-yard box following a cross by Morricko Iris.
Later in the half Gladwin Lambert, the Eagles goalkeeper made a couple of crucial saves in quick succession following a BAA free kick on the left side of the box. Midfielder Jahkari Furbert twice went close for the home side with two long range efforts. The first, from 30 yards, caught Lambert off his line before he back-peddled to tip the shot over the crossbar.
Minutes later Furbert’s left foot tested the ‘keeper again, this time his effort from 25 yards smashed against the crossbar.
