Queenie's kite-making tips on offer at grand opening
The grand opening of the Collector's Hill Apothecary will see two special guests demonstrate their talents. Janet "Queenie'' Abraham, Bermuda's expert kite maker, will demonstrate her craft on Saturday at the Collector's Hill Apothecary and musical ensembles from the Saltus Grammar School will perform tomorrow and Saturday. The public is invited to drop by enjoy the musical entertainment and ask Mrs. Abraham for her kite-making advice, buy supplies on sale, or even purchase a ready made kite for Good Friday. Kite making tips: The tighter the string, the tauter the paper will be.
Put glue in microwave for about a minute, or until liquid, then brush on with a paintbrush for the best results.
The thinner the hummers, the louder the sound.
Always put the lightest colour on first.
To make the paper taut, place completed kite in front of heater.
For the best Bermuda kites, always use wood and paper, never metal or wire.
The groups from the Saltus Grammar School include a jazz band recently formed by music teacher, Lisa Maule which features the students playing a variety of styles.
A brass quintet directed by brass teacher, Tim Rhodes began rehearsing in September of last year and made its debut performance playing carols as part of the Christmas festivities.
Both ensembles played in the televised `Carols for All' concert at St. John's Church last Christmas and are very pleased to perform again for the Phoenix Stores.
The school's music department will be travelling to Montreal, Canada next month as part of an exchange with the Centenary High School in Greenfield Park.
