Wollmann shining in Miami
Cecilia Wollmann continued her superb start to her Olympic Games qualifying bid at the Sailing World Cup in Miami yesterday.
Wollmann, who finished eighth in Monday’s opening race, placed sixth yesterday in the women’s Laser Radial to leave her in eighth position in a fleet of 81 boats.
Leading the fleet is Lijia Xu, of China, after posting finishes of first and second in her two races.
Also competing in Miami is Bermuda’s Cameron Pimentel, in the men’s Laser. In order to achieve their qualifying objectives, Wollmann and Pimentel must finish as the top North American sailors yet to qualify for Rio in their respective racing fleets.
Pimentel endured a mixed bag of results yesterday, having finished 23rd and 41st on Monday.
He record an impressive ninth finish in yesterday’s opening race before dropping back down the fleet with a 31st, leaving him in 54th position in an overall fleet of 98 boats.
The Sailing World Cup, which runs until January 30, features more than 780 Olympic and Paralympic sailors from 64 countries competing across ten Olympic classes. Saturday’s Medal Races will be televised live.
