Possible reprieve for good-natured pitbulls

Good-natured pitbulls could get dropped from the Bermuda Government’s list of banned pets, according to a proposal now under review.

At present the animals are among several classified as prohibited breeds, and are subject to being euthanised.

The policy has generated significant outcry, and last month the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment began looking into “a sustainable long-term solution”.

It was recently amended to allow owners to send their seized pets to new homes overseas, as an alternative to having the animals put down.

Yesterday a ministry spokesman said the canine advisory committee had handed in its recommendations, including suggestions for “pitbulls of appropriate temperament” to get taken off the list.

The approval would be contingent on dogs meeting “temperament criteria”, as well as the owners’ ability to cater to their care and security needs.

“The ministry is working on how this recommendation can be piloted, as it has implications on resources and legislation,” the spokesman added.
