Air Care duo to gain overseas experience
Two young Bermudians will be passing on their skills and knowledge while gaining invaluable experience overseas thanks to openings in South Africa and the Cayman Islands with their employer Air Care Ltd.Stratton Hatfield will be flying out to Johannesburg on March 18 for four weeks to work with Air Care’s sister company Amabane (which means ‘bright light’).Aaron Chase will be heading to Cayman to team up with Otis Air Conditioning Ltd for six weeks, gaining training on the installation of a temperature control system at the civil airport terminal, with the date to be confirmed once other work has been completed.Mr Chase, an HVAC installation technician, was the ideal candidate to send with his extensive experience of working with Daikin AC’s variable refrigerant volume (VRV) air conditioning system and the training he received from the manufacturer, as well as having previously worked abroad carrying out a project at the Blue Waters hotel in Antigua three years ago.Daikin is one of the most efficient products on the market at the moment that works by reducing energy and operational costs.Mr Hatfield, a maintenance sales representative, who joined Air Care in July 2009, has already built up an impressive track record, setting up 70 maintenance agreements in the space of 19 months and has just received an award from the Linc Organisation in recognition of his sales success. He was the youngest person among a select group of 25 people chosen for the award.During his time in South Africa, Mr Hatfield will assist in training staff at Amabane in the Linc maintenance sales process with a view to drumming up more related sales.Air Care launched Amabane two years ago and is a shareholder in the company, in addition to sending some of its African employees back to work there at the end of their work permit term limits. He said that maintenance of mechanical systems was a continual business as it would always be required, but added that Air Care conducted proactive visits to service the equipment rather than waiting for it to break down.In fact the hand over from installation to maintenance is done on an ongoing basis and Air Care has some more projects in the pipeline including working with Otis Air Conditioning on a condominium development in the Cayman Islands, with the equipment and labour being exported from Bermuda. As a dedicated professional, Mr Hatfield, who works in the commercial and residential markets, will also be in contact with his customers in Bermuda while overseas.“I think it is great that as two young Bermudians we have been given this opportunity,” he said.He plans to continue his education in leadership management and ultimately he sees his future firmly in Bermuda.Mr. Chase, who previously worked for Arctic, a division of Air Care, is currently studying a general management course at Bermuda College with the aim to get promoted to a managerial position within the firm.Carrying out work on everything from the installation of ventilation and refrigeration systems to commercial and industrial air conditioning systems, most recently he is leading the installation of a VRV air conditioning system for Federal Express in the New Venture House.“I feel that as a company we are doing really well, especially during a recession we have not laid off any workers, work has been consistent and we have been able to take home a pay cheque every week, so I am happy,” he said.Robert Platt, general manager of Air Care, said that the pair had earned the opportunity to apply their trade in a new environment and were bucking the trend of outside experts coming to Bermuda to carry out training as leaders in their field sharing their expertise abroad.Describing himself as “very proud” of the pair’s achievements, he said: “It is great I believe we have the strongest team and these two guys are really great examples of young people who have gone the extra mile.“I am just so proud to lend them out to help other organisations in other countries.“It is huge for their development to work in another environment and bring the knowledge they have gained back to Bermuda to strengthen our team.”Both will report back to the rest of the team on their experiences and to help boost company morale.
