Motorcyclist admits role in fatal accident

A motorcyclist has admitted causing the death of a father by driving carelessly.

Jason Stovell crashed into Winston Jones at the junction of Reid Street and Court Street killing him and injuring his 14-year-old son, Shirwin, who was his pillion passenger.

The accident took place on October 18 last year, shortly after Hurricane Gonzalo struck Bermuda as Mr Jones drove his son to his workplace to get a shower.

Mr Jones sustained serious injuries that he succumbed to, while his son was also badly injured.

At Supreme Court, Stovell, 26, admitted a series of offences in connection with the accident.

He pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving, causing death by driving while being uninsured and causing bodily harm to Shirwin Jones by neglectful driving.

Stovell was released on bail and will appear back at court on February 1, next year, when a sentencing date will be set.

Previously in the aftermath of the accident The Royal Gazette reported that Mr Jones was a devoted husband and father.

His wife Shirelle remembered him as a consummate family man.

The two had been married for 17 years at the time of his death and he had worked at the Hamilton Princess, Bermuda for more than 16 years where he had climbed the ranks to become head of its purchasing department.

Mr Jones hailed originally from St Ann’s Bay, capital of the parish of St Ann in Jamaica, and maintained close relationships with siblings and school friends.
