The St John Ambulance charity held its annual St John Day Service yesterday at the Anglican Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity.

Governor George Ferguson attended, as did senior medical officers and police staff.

The service was followed by awards and prizegiving functions for St John volunteers at Government House.

A formal change-of-command ceremony also took place, during which outgoing Commissioner Stephen Gunn transferred the sword of command of operations to incoming Commissioner Gareath Adderley.

Chairman and St John Commander, Justin Williams, thanked all of those involved for their dedication and service.

“You all volunteer your time selflessly to ensure the well being and safety of the community,” he said.

“From our doctors and medical officers to our ambulance drivers, first aiders to our Police and Regiment liaison officers, to Brigade members, I am grateful to and proud of you all.”

Mr Fergusson commended the charity for its community work, highlighting the valuable service provided.

Long-service awards were presented to three members, commendations and certificates to another 15, and promotions given to the new colour guard and junior division.

Mr Fergusson also supported the charity’s tag day on Friday by purchasing the first tag from St John Ambulance Junior Colour Sergeant, Andrew Crumley, at Government House.

Mr Williams said: “We would like to thank past donors such as Marsh & McLennan, XL Reinsurance, our anonymous donors, as well as HSBC Bank Bermuda, Clarien Bank, Lines Overseas Management, the MarketPlace and other major institutions for allowing St John to sell tags from their premises, and the Bermuda Police Service for their support and donation of decommissioned equipment.

“St John will be providing ambulance, CPR and first aid support throughout the forthcoming America’s Cup Event.

“We look forward to continuing to serve the community and to remaining on station to ensure its wellbeing.”
