Push to ease traffic chaos during Walkabout
Efforts are being made to ease the traffic impact of tomorrow’s National Trust Walkabout in St George’s.
The event, which gives members of the public access to a number of historic National Trust properties, has in the past caused some traffic congestion in the East End.
St George’s town manager, Candy-Lee Foggo, said yesterday that some of the issues were due to the nature of the town’s roadways, saying: “The thing with St George’s is there is only one road in.
“This year we are going to have a one-way system to try to alleviate the congestion on the roads.”
She also said that in past years, some members of the public began to arrive in St George’s before the volunteers, leading to less-efficient use of the available parking areas. This year, the Corporation will have some of its staff in place to help to assist until the volunteers arrive.
Parking will be available at Penno’s Wharf, both in the car park and on the dock itself.
Additional parking areas will be available at Somers Playhouse and the East End Primary School Field, but no parking will be available on York Street.
Duke of Kent Street will be one-way during the event, while access to Duke of Clarence Street and Old Maid’s Lane will be restricted to residents only.
Meanwhile, Kings Square, Ordnance Island and Water Street West will be closed to vehicular traffic between 4pm and 11.30pm.
