THE BERMUDA DIETETIC ASSOCIATION The Bermuda Dietetic Association is a professional association founded in 1989 by the locally practising registered dietitian/nutritionists.

The Association's objective is to promote and support quality dietetic practice among its members as they work to improve the nutrition knowledge and well-being of the public.

Our Objectives for Nutrition Week 1993 are to: Help students understand the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and regular physical exercise in development a healthy lifestyle.

Increase public awareness as to the importance of eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day and exercising five times a week Encourage parents to offer a wider selection of fruits and vegetables to their children, by providing tasty recipe ideas for them to try.

Raise the profile of the registered dietitian as the recognised authority for nutrition care and information.

STRIVE FOR FIVE RECIPES Fruits and vegetables taste great, make a valuable contribution to a well balanced diet; however, we in Bermuda are not taking advantages of these great foods. We are not reaching our basic goal of five or more servings each day.

Research clearly shows that cutting back on fats and eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day can make a difference to our overall health.

Why are fruits and vegetables so important? They are good sources of complex carbohydrates, fibre and vitamins (especially vitamin C and beta-carotene) and minerals. These important nutrients in conjunction with a low fat diet, help reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. As almost all fruits and vegetables are naturally low in fat, they can easily be substituted for foods high in fat to help achieve a low fat diet.

For Nutrition Week 1993, the Bermuda Dietetic Association wish to encourage everyone in Bermuda to "Strive for Five'' and make and effort to get five or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily. This supplement is packed with information on how to get your family to eat more fruits and vegetables and to exercise more. Also look out for the "Strive for Five'' fruit and vegetable information and recipe sheet, sponsored by Amaral's Fruit and Vegetable Market, Bermuda Farmers Association, Butterfield and Vallis, Market Place and Winter and Cookson; This will be available in the grocery stores during nutrition week. Protect your health and "Strive for Five and Exercise''.

BODY WALK HEALTH FAIR Can you imagine a better way to learn about the body than to crawl inside and take a look around? That's what Bermuda's ten-year-olds will be doing on Tuesday and Wednesday February 16 and 17 and members of the public are invited to do on the 18th at the Number 6 Shed on Front street.

The Body Walk is conducted by the Department of Health, in conjunction with the Bermuda dietetic Association, through the kind sponsorship of Appleby, Spurling and Kempe, Argus Insurance Company, Bacardi International, Bank of Bermuda, Bermuda Electric Light Company, BF&M Life Insurance Company, Colonial Insurance, Dunkley's Dairy, Fidelity International, John Barritt & Son, Johnson & Higgins, Kitson and Company, Shell Company of Bermuda, and Bermuda Branch of SunLife of Canada.

The Body Walk encourages children to learn about nutrition and health in a fun, action-oriented way. Children enter the body through a large mouth and participate in 7 stations before being exhaled from the lungs. Some interesting characters are encountered along the way -- a rock band (stomach), Tin Man (heart), construction workers (bone), and exercise enthusiast (muscles).

Not only will it be fun for the students, but it has been fun for all those individuals involved in the preparation for the event. The stations will be manned by health visitors, district nurses, school nurses, dental nurses, dietitians, as well as students from Mount Saint Agnes Academy and Warwick Academy. Many businesses and Government departments and King Edward Memorial Hospital have donated props for the event; Casemates inmates have built the mouth and various other body parts for the Body Walk.

LINDO'S NUTRIFIT ROAD RACE/WALKATHON Lindo's have sponsored the Nutrifit road race and walkathon since the first Nutrition Week was held in March 1989. This year it is on Sunday, February 21.

The Walkathon starts at 9 a.m. and is approximately three miles; the five mile road race starts at 9:30 a.m.

'DEM BONES -- The Grade 10 girls with teachers Ms Sharon Cook show off at the Bones display, part of the Body Walk, open to the public, February 18 and Number 6 Shed.

OPEN WIDE -- Mr. Mervin Smith looks out the obvious entrance to `The Body Walk'. He and other Casemates inmates built various parts of the display.

VEGETABLE CRITTERS -- Students at Woodlands School made "vegetable critters'' as a Nutrition Week activity. Here, James Wilson, 8, uses a potato to make a creature as art teacher Mrs. Phyllis Harshaw looks on.
