Saltus student wins scholarship

Mr. Lowry attended Mount Saint Agnes Academy and Saltus Grammar School. He is also a graduate of the Saltus Senior Year programme.

He has been accepted to McGill University's undergraduate programme in Montreal and hopes to gain a Bachelor of Science degree in physics.

Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Butterfield established the McGill Bermuda Scholarship Trust in 1988. The recipient is awarded $4,000 a year for up to four years.

The scholarship represents "a strong commitment to the education and advancement of young people in Bermuda,'' said a spokesperson for the Trust.

POLICE APPEAL POL Police appeal Police yesterday appealed for witnesses of a hit-and-run accident which occurred near Five Star Island on Middle Road, Southampton, on August 1.

The two-vehicle accident, which happened around 7.30 p.m., resulted in extensive damage to a Subaru car which was struck by a maroon Hyundai travelling west on Middle Road.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Andrea Browne said the driver of Subaru was not injured, but the impact caused her car, which was travelling east, to spin around 180 degrees and face west. The driver of the Hyundai never stopped.

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact P.c. Paul Hitchens at Somerset Police Station on 234-1010.

SHIP DIVERTED SHI Ship diverted The German-registered container ship Canada Express was forced to divert to Bermuda yesterday morning after its chief officer suffered a heart attack.

A Harbour Radio spokesman said the ship was on its way from Kingston, Jamaica, to Rotterdam when the officer suffered the attack.

The ship -- which was some 120 miles off Bermuda -- was scheduled to arrive off St. David's around 2.30 a.m.

RINGS STOLEN CRM Rings stolen Gold rings depicting an Indian's head and a Mercedes Benz symbol were snatched from a St. David's home while the owner was out this week.

The intruder stole the two rings after slipping into the Texas Road home through a kitchen window on Wednesday night.

Police also reported yesterday that a 41-year-old Pembroke man had been arrested over the theft of 17 bottles of alcohol from a Hamilton bar earlier this week.

STOLE WHISKEY CTS Stole whiskey A Southampton man who stole a bottle of Jack Daniels from the Modern Mart was fined $75 in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Antoine T. Tucker, 25, of Horseshoe Road pleaded guilty to the charge. Insp.

Peter Duffy, prosecuting, told the court that on July 16 at 8.35 p.m., Tucker entered the Paget store. "He picked up a bottle of Jack Daniels whisky and placed it in his helmet,'' said Insp. Duffy.

"Before leaving the store, Tucker paid for a bottle of Coke. While he was outside the manager stopped him and detained him until the Police arrived.''
