New winter league on horizon
Bermuda Basketball Association (BBA) are looking to set up a new winter league to be held over a six-week period prior to the Premier Basketball League (PBL).
The Elite City League will adopt an NBA-style draft system, allowing the six head coaches to pick from 72 local players who they will be able to scout at two player showcases.
Matches will be played three days a-week at Berkeley Institute, Mount Saint Agnes and CedarBridge Academy with each team playing ten games from mid-November to mid-January.
A BBA press release yesterday said that all prospective coaches must submit their resumes by the end of this week before being interviewed.
For those players who do not make the cut, the BBA are looking to create a House League that will also run during the winter period leading up to the PBL.
So to expose players to the same rules used at the international level, the Elite City League will adopt FIBA international rules, rather than those played at the high school level.
Each of the six sides will have their own sponsor who will act as franchise owners and choose team names..
The BBA also plan to set up a new free youth clinic which will be held every Saturday morning of the regular season as part of the soon-to-be established Youth Basketball Academy.
The list of potential team sponsors for the inaugural Elite City Basketball League is Captain's Lounge, Flanagan's, Docksiders, Robin Hood, Spring Garden and The Beach.
Each player will have to pay $50 to the BBA to play in the league.
