Pony killed in harness race

Last night’s Bermuda Cablevision harness stakes racing at Vesey Street was abandoned after a pony was tragically killed while racing.According to observers, Robert Lopes’ colt Shadow Play died after suffering fatal injuries in a collision involving two other ponies during heat 13.All three drivers involved in the accident were shaken but unhurt, sources told The Royal Gazette. It is understood the accident started when a pony (Imagine That) driven by Philip Correia went down on the track while leading the race that resulted in two other two ponies, Mercedes Spence and Shadow Play driven by teenagers Kiwon Waldron and Tyler Lopes, colliding with the fallen pony and its driver. It could not be confirmed exactly when Lopes’ colt died at press time last night.Following the accident the remainder of the night’s scheduled racing was halted.Driving Horse and Pony Club president Arnold Manders confirmed that the accident had occurred and that a pony had died as a result but would not give further details. He did, however, reveal that an autopsy will be held to determine what the pony died from. One source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “This is quite upsetting because no one wants to see a horse lose its life on the track.“Some people were very sad but this comes with horse racing. It’s not uncommon for a horse to take a bad step and go down.”Just last weekend, Mount Saint Agnes student Tyler Lopes guided Shadow Play to victory competing in the 1:08/3- 1:10/3 time bar.“This was certainly a confidence boost towards my goal of winning the three-year-old Stake with my pony (Shadow Play) and keep progressing with him,” he told this newspaper in an interview earlier this week.
