Hundreds seek to help dementia sufferers
Hundreds applied for a course launched this week to train the public in looking after persons with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, according to the Bermuda Legion.
Carol Everson, a welfare case worker for the veterans’ charity, said more than 300 people had called to inquire about getting qualified. The Legion is offering morning, afternoon or evening options for the training sessions.
“We have already had five staff from the Sylvia Richardson rest home sign up, and significant interest from the hospital as well,” Ms Everson said.
The “Keeping Our Heroes Home” training sessions, which run until November 26, are on offer with the help of Alzheimer’s Disease International.
John Vos, deputy executive director of ADI, is to visit the Island and meet the Governor, George Fergusson, and key personnel in the field of healthcare to discuss the Island’s treatment options, as well as the need for more residential facilities.
Registration for the course is still open, at 4pm today in the Argus Building. The insurer has donated its boardrooms for the training sessions.
