Theatre producer pulls out of awards ceremony
Whoever emerges as the winner of the Bermuda Musical and Dramatic Society's 'Famous for Fifteen Minutes' playwriting festival will not be receiving the 'Golden Inkwell' and cash award from the Aquila Theatre Company producer/director Peter Meineck, as originally announced.
Instead, the honours will be done by Robert Richmond, who is associate artistic director of the same New York theatre company.
The last-minute change comes as a result of Mr. Meineck's "unforeseen work developments".
"Aquila's name is synonymous with good theatre, talented individuals and a wealth of experience, and whilst we are disappointed that Peter will not be able to take part in this festival, we are delighted to have someone of Robert's stature who will bring a critical eye to judging our playwright and scripts, as well as providing constructive feedback," co-producer Adrienne Hintz said.
Mr. Richmond, a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, has extensive experience as a theatre professional. He has acted in prestigious Scottish, English and US theatres, as well doing television work. He currently teaches in the classical studio at New York University's TISCH School of Arts, and also composes and arranges music for Aquila, radio and television.
He was last in Bermuda two years ago with the Aquila Theatre Company as both director and actor for its Bermuda Festival performances of 'A Midsummer Nights Dream' and 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.
The six finalists in the BMDS 'Famous for Fifteen Minutes' playwriting Festival will have their works performed at Daylesford Theatre from March 17-20, and the winner will receive his or her 'Golden Inkwell' and cash prize from Mr. Richmond at the conclusion of the final performance on March 20.
