This was pure capitalism at its worst

National treasure: in this file photograph Johnny Barnes greets passers-by at East Broadway roundabout

Dear Sir,

Today (October 29, 20015) as I drove in to work, I saw about 15 people crowded on the median triangle where Johnny Barnes waves to us each morning and gives his love unconditionally to the Bermuda public.

When I have seen non-profits hovering over him in the past, I turned a blind eye because perhaps their cause may have warranted imposing on Johnny and his morning of good wishes, but today (and other days in the past) was pure capitalism at its worst.

This morning, there were way too many people on the median triangle waving and holding banners for some online bargain shopping business.

I could not even see Johnny in the crowd.

He is too gracious and kind to ever say a bad word about the invasion.

As if their dominance of the median triangle was not enough, when one drives towards the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, there are more placards stuck in the grass for the same company. When is the Government going to put a stop to the litter approach to advertising on Crow Lane.

Why can’t these companies use traditional advertising like the rest of us, such as the newspaper, local magazines and television? Johnny’s message is about love and I will try to love these people who take advantage of his popularity for capital gain, but I still say they need to go. Love is greater than money.

LET JOHNNY BE
