Women banned from roads for drink-driving
A Hamilton Parish woman has been banned from the roads for 18 months for driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.
Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Shawnette Smith, 43, pleaded guilty to the offence, which took place in Hamilton Parish on Saturday.
Prosecutor Nicole Smith told the court that Smith was stopped by police officers on North Shore Road after they noticed her car had a defective front light and no back lights.
As they informed Smith of their observations, the officers smelled alcohol on her breath and noted that her eyes were glazed.
Smith was taken to Hamilton Police Station where it was determined that she had 203 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than two times the legal limit of 80mg.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed her a $1,200 fine and disqualified her from driving for 18 months.
In a separate matter, a Warwick woman was also taken off the roads after she admitted driving while over the legal blood alcohol limit in Pembroke on Saturday.
The court heard that 23-year-old Coshea Cann was arrested after police officers attended an accident on Burnaby Street at about 1.50am.
They observed a car with a damaged bumper stationary in the southbound lane and two other vehicles on the street had damage to their off side.
Cann was identified as the driver and taken to Hamilton Police Station, where it was determined that she had 151mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood.
Mr Tokunbo handed Cann $1,200 fine and banned her from driving for 18 months.
