Planners give chapel hamlet their blessing
Plans to build a new chapel hamlet on the Morgan’s Point property have been given the go-ahead by planners.
The Development Applications Board recommended that the development, which was proposed by Brian and Nancy Duperreault, be given approval last week.
The proposals will see a new chapel building built on the former baselands, along with a small museum, parsonage, storage building and parking facilities in an area off Constitution Road.
The project would also include restroom facilities, an above-ground water tank and extensive landscaping of the property.
The planning documents state that the chapel hamlet would be a “very open and green/landscaped space” coupled with the buildings, which would boast a “predominately traditional Bermudian style”.
Developers estimate about 100 visitors to the chapel on average per event, and have based the parking and facilities on that number.
Mr and Mrs Duperreault initially applied in 2012 for planning permission to redevelop an existing church on the property as part of larger plans to build multiple hotels on the peninsula.
The building reportedly fell into a state of disrepair after the US armed forces pulled out in 1995.
