Rego beaten in Orange Bowl event

Bermuda's Chris Rego was defeated in his qualifying match at the 49th Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship in Miami.Rego, the Under-13 ITF Caribbean Champion, went down in his Boys' Under-14 clash against USA's Mirko Radosevic 6-0, 6-3 on Tuesday.The 13-year-old, who attends the acclaimed Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Florida, won the Trombetta Local Fall Championships earlier this year.One of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the world, the junior Orange Bowl Championships has attracted more than 1200 competitors from 75 countries from Asia, Europe, North, South and Central America.Britain's Andy Murray, who is doing his close-season training in Miami, is a former Orange Bowl champion in the 12-and-under category.David Lambert, president of the Bermuda Lawn and Tennis Association (BLTA) said he was “proud” of Rego's efforts in Miami..“The Orange Bowl Championships is a very prestigious tournament and we're proud of Chris' efforts,” he said. “Chris, along with Tyler Smith, have shown we can produce top young tennis players and I'm sure we have some more coming through to follow in their footsteps.”Lambert said Rego would be touring Central America as part of an ITF developmental programme in the new year, playing in tournaments in El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rico. Last year saw Smith, who is the best Under-13 female player in the Caribbean, further her tennis education on the same tour.
