Classical allusions: John Milton’s ‘Areopagitica’
Dear Sir,
More than 50 years ago, an excellent Bermudian teacher, Arthur Motyer, introduced his students to Milton’s ‘Areopagitica’.
It is widely regarded as the definitive work on freedom of expression. While full of many classical and Biblical allusions, its difficulty for the modern reader should not deter us from coming to grips with it. Published as a tract addressed to the Parliament of England in 1644, it has relevance to all our legislative representatives, elected and appointed.
The last word must belong to Milton: “Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to conscience, above all liberties.”
