Police recapture escaped prisoner

Jamiko Bean

Escaped prison Jamiko Bean was recaptured by police this afternoon.

Bean was arrested by officers at a residence near Riddell’s Bay after a brief chase.

Police spotted Bean on Middle Road in Southampton on a motorcycle just before 4pm, and gave chase after the 33-year-old jumped off the bike, and hid in the area around the MarketPlace store at Heron Bay.

“Bean was captured without a struggle and taken to Hamilton Police Station where he was processed and detained,” a police spokesman said. “Police would like to thank the public for their assistance with this matter.”

Bean had escaped from police custody yesterday afternoon while being transported, and was seen in the Riviera area of Southampton yesterday, before being spotted in the central parishes earlier this morning.

Police had said that Bean was not considered to be a danger, but had reminded the general public that, “harbouring a prisoner is a punishable offence by fine or imprisonment.”

Bean was jailed for four years after a drug-induced burglary spree in July 2012.
