Cal Bean races to the top of Lodge St George
Historic Lodge St George No.200 on the Grand Registry of Scotland has a new Right Worshipful Master. His real name is Calvin Leroy Bean, probably best known island-wide simply as Cal Bean, the veteran 24th of May marathon runner and seven times champion.Being one of the island’s foremost building contractors, it might be presumed that he’s no stranger to masonry, that is to say ‘operative masonry.’ But when it comes to ‘speculative masonry’ and Scottish Freemasonry at that, it’s an entirely different thing. The new RWMaster proved himself well last week when he took the chair of the oldest Scottish Lodge in Bermuda, if not in the western hemisphere, with roots dating back to the late 1700s. And after his own installation in keeping with ancient custom, and in grand style, Bro. Cal went through the ceremony of installing each of his own officers into their respective offices. The impressive ceremony was followed by a formal banquet in the lodge, most appropriately named and situated in the Old State House of Bermuda’s original capital; the building is the oldest stone house in the country.RW Bean took his first steps in freemasonry years ago when initiated in Somers Isle Lodge 1503, situated on Hog Bay Level in Sandys Parish. He gravitated to the East End and ultimately to his distinctive office. One of the highlight of his ensuing year will be processing his entire lodge to King’s Square for the ceremonial payment to the Governor of One Peppercorn for the Lodge’s use of the State House since the late 1800s.
