Social messages through his art

Calix Smith

An artist with a social commentary has placed subliminal messages in his work for audiences of his latest exhibition to find.Calix Smith’s ‘Dark Ages: Youth in Revolt’ opens at the Bermuda Society of Arts gallery tonight.“I think people are tired and looking for answers but it seems like they can’t find them or they keep speculating,” he said.“Aesthetically, I think these pieces are highly controversial. I’ve deviated from text and left the message to be subliminal.“I think I have done enough of telling you and letting you know what I am about. If you have followed my work, you should get the general idea and usually my titles lead you in that direction.”‘Domestic Violence’, is one of the pieces on display. A second, ‘Co-existing with Niggers’, is about having “a negative outlook on life”.‘Politriks’ “looks at the general disdain that we have towards Government and not just the Government, but our MPs as a whole, as an entity”.Mr Smith has shown his work in seven exhibitions over the past year. Three of those were solo exhibits.“So it has been a pretty good year with getting the aesthetic out and critical acclaim,” he said.“People know what I am about now. So when you come to this exhibition you know what to expect in a sense, but you still don’t. So that’s the good thing.”Poets from the Chewstick Foundation will be on hand for an open mic session when the exhibit opens at 5.30pm.‘Dark Ages: Youth in Revolt’ is on exhibit at the BSoA through January 25.
