Victim: ?The total impact of this crime is not yet known to me?

The middle-aged woman targeted by Burgess must endure a two-year wait to discover if she has AIDS, because the drug-addict rapist did not use a condom.

In a statement about the impact on her, read to Puisne Justice Carlisle Greaves by a Police officer, the victim said she has had blood tests for both AIDS and hepatitis and must repeat them if she experiences flu-like symptoms.

A cocktail of drugs she must take to address the health fears have made her nauseous and given her headaches, she said.

No mention was made in Supreme Court of whether Burgess actually has AIDS or if his victim knows whether she has the HIV virus that can lead to it.

But Mr. Justice Greaves remarked as he sentenced Burgess: "This so-called drug addict living out in the wild transgresses upon the body of a woman in her own bed in the night, in this age when sex is equal to death. It is called the equation of AIDS. Not even a condom did he wear."

The woman, who cannot be identified, said her life has changed for ever.

"I'm no longer able to live in my own house by myself. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to live on my own again. Due to the violation that occurred in my house I have had to accept I will never live there again," she said.

She added that she feels overwhelming fear when she walks by herself, and her ability to perform her job has been affected so badly she intends to resign.

Having given evidence that Burgess told her he was sent to commit the burglary by drug-pushers he owed money, she also told the court: "I'm apprehensive about my future and safety for fear that this crime will happen to me again by the same perpetrator or his friends."

She concluded her statement by telling the judge: "This crime has dramatically altered the course of my life in a way I am not yet able to fully quantify as I'm not yet able to determine what I will do next or where I will live. The total impact of this crime is not yet known to me."
