Local environmentalist in Icelandic adventure
A Bermudian environmentalist is on an Icelandic adventure on a Greenpeace ship.
Dolphin protester and cyberactivist Lisa Vickers arrived in Reykjavik on June 17 where she will chronicle the Greenpeace campaign at http://weblog.greenpeace.org/iceland.
The Greenpeace ship and her 24 crew are campaigning for the cessation of scientific whaling in Iceland?s waters. Their visit coincides with the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission this week in Korea, where representatives from governments around the world were expected to decide whether or not to lift the current ban on whaling.
Ms Vickers was so excited about her adventure she was unable to sleep for 37 hours.
?For me, the day started out as I was arriving in London from Bermuda at 6.30 a.m.? she said. ?I finally made it here by 6 p.m. just in time for dinner on the ship,? she said.
?I got to sleep at about 2 a.m. and woke up at 7 a.m. for no apparent reason except maybe because we?re in Iceland! There are whales and volcanoes and glaciers here and these are not things which make you want to stay in bed. It?s nearly midnight now and I knew it would still be light but actually seeing the sky lit up with soft pinks and blues and a moon floating above the snow-scattered mountains is really something else.?
