Teen talent takes centre stage
the glitter, fireworks and special effects of a rock concert, but tonight's All-Star extravaganza at National Stadium promises to entertain.
From the primary level through to secondary, on show will be the best school soccer talent the Island has to offer.
The feature match will involve the Secondary Schools East All-Stars against the West (8.30 p.m.) and will stand as the series finale, with a new format to be formulated as Bermuda moves into the mega-school era.
Presently the series is deadlocked at 10-10, with the East entering as defending champions.
But East coach Jon Beard and counterpart Danvers Seymour said the status of the overall series situation had little bearing on their sides' approach.
"I don't know. I think, with the All-Star, everyone wants to win it anyway and it doesn't make a lot of difference,'' said Beard, whose East contingent enter as slight underdogs.
"I think the impetus is going to be the fact that they're out there in front of their friends and family representing their schools and they'd want to win it whether it was 10-10 or they're down or up in the series.'' Seymour concurred, saying: "Whether it's tied up at 10-10 or 8-2 or 7-3, it doesn't make much of a difference for the young people, because they just see the All-Star as that ultimate goal that they must achieve while at the Secondary level.
"For them it's quite a highlight and I don't think they're so much bothered about the numbers, I think they're just worried about winning or losing.'' Both teams have potential match winners, with the East possessing one of the Island's brightest young talents in 15-year-old Berkeley Institute student John Barry Nusum, who has made several appearances for Second Division outfit Wolves.
For the West, Warwick Academy's Jay Smith is highly regarded as a goalkeeper, having secured his place with First Division side PHC.
Preceding the main affair will be two East versus West fixtures involving Primary Schools All-Stars, with the first (Year Six) commencing at 5.30 p.m.
and the second (MM One) at 7.00 p.m.
