Association Match Play Championship got under way at Riddell's Bay yesterday.

Steven Carruthers, fresh off a second-place finish in last week's Fecchio Cup, made his way through to the semifinals on account of a hard-fought three-and-two victory over David James.

But while Carruthers is favoured to take top honours he faces a battle with the likes of Justin Barritt, Kent Smith and Robert Spurling also advancing in the Championship Flight.

Barritt was particularly unforgiving in his six-and-five demolition of Shawn Wade while Smith and Spurling recorded favourable four-and-three and three-and-two results against Matthew Hocking and Daymon Smith respectively.

Action in the First Flight had Michael Fahy take a lopsided eight-and-seven decision over Ricky Carruthers while Geoffrey Hindess defeated David Smith four and three and Richard Fulton squeaked past Nigel Swain two and one.

Ian Smith and Adrian Beasley similarly enjoyed success in the Second Flight and Sara lindo, Ben Beasley and C.Smith playing from the red tees each won over their opponents.

Quinton Bean on Saturday captained a foursome containing Alfred Esdaille, Jr., Ivan Smith and Howard Tucker to a three stroke win in the Alfred Esdaille Memorial tournament put on at Belmont by the Salvation Army Cedar Hill Men's Fellowship.

BASKETBALL BAS Dream Team overcame a stiff challenge from Bank of Bermuda before emerging with a 56-44 win in Bermuda Basketball Association play last week.

Tony Williams led Dream Team with 22 points while Tim Trott put in 16 for the bank.

The second game on Monday saw Clearly Canadians clearly crush Exile Allsorts 96-23. A balanced attack saw R.Walker score 21 points for the winners while Ben Smith had 11 for Allsorts.

Tuesday's lone game saw Somerset Rebels get by Nationals 48-31 with Ijumo Hayward getting 15 points and Alden Ray 11 for the losers.
