Trio off to PEI for marine training programme

Three Bermudians will pursue their dream this summer by taking part in a marine cadet training programme in Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Vernon Harrison, Brendon Flemming and Daniel Galloway will participate in the programme, which trains students to work on commercial vessels. They will learn safe working procedures including basic safety training, survival training, advanced first aid and radio operation training. After three months of training, they will complete two months at sea on a Bermuda-registered ship.

Senator David Burch said the opportunity came through an agreement between Holland College in Prince Edward Island and Government's National Training Board. "This marine training opportunity is the second programme the National Training Board has successfully underwritten with this higher learning institution."

In February, three Bermudian chef apprentices from the Fairmont Group undertook a six-week programme at Holland's Culinary Institute.
