Insley, Mullan win ocean swim: BERMUDA BRIEF
winners of the latest race in the Summer Ocean Swim series held at Horseshoe Bay on Saturday.
The event attracted 45 swimmers with Insley placing first overall in 17 minutes, 36 seconds over a course slightly short of one mile. Mullan was fourth overall and first female in 18.50.
Assistance was provided by the Park Service lifeguards on surf boards as swimmers had to negotiate rough swells and water surging over the rocks and reefs. "I really enjoyed it,'' said Insley. "When the ocean is this rough you are on your own. You can't draft another swimmer because the next wave will wash you away.'' Insley was nearly 30 seconds ahead of his closest competitors, two juniors, Graham Smith (18.03) and Jonathan Herring (18.13).
Mullan, 37 seconds behind Herring, fended off two other top female swimmers, Tamika Williams and the late arriving Jeanne Meunier. Williams was sixth in 19.06 and Meunier ninth in 19.51.
The next event in the Pepperidge Farm series will be a one-mile race at Cross Bay Beach, next to the Sonesta Beach Hotel on Saturday, July 11, starting at 5.00 p.m.
