Football veterans in fund-raiser

Two fund-raising football matches featuring some of Bermuda?s greats from the past will kick off at Devonshire Recreation Club tonight to help cycle crash victim and former Devonshire Colts, Wolves and Prison Officers forward Cal DeShields.

DeShields? vision has deteriorated since he was involved in a traffic accident last year and event organisers hope to raise funds to cover his medical expenses for treatment in Baltimore later this year.

Tonight?s double-header at the the Den will see donations accepted at the gate and free meals provided for those who come out to support the cause.

A Devonshire Colts squad containing former national team skipper Lorenzo Symonds, Clevie (Palmer) Wade, Jeff Richardson, Ellsworth Lambert, Vic Ball and former national coaches Gary Darrell and Carlton (Pepe) Dill will take on a Ricky Hill-led Hamilton Parish side, beginning at 7 p.m.

Parish?s squad will also boast the likes of Leroy (Nibs) Lewis, who coached PHC Zebras to success in the 1980s, former Boulevard player Oscar Samuels, former Bailey?s Bay cricket skipper Noel Gibbons, Quinn Outerbridge and Robin (Rambo) Steede.

A Wolves squad containing brothers Paul, Derek and Kirk Douglas along with cousin Day Douglas, Vince Minors sr, Dean (Bussy) Pitt and Carlos (CP) Pearman will later do battle against a George Brangman-led Prison Officers squad also boasting the likes of Somerset Trojans coach Dennis Brown, Vivian (Bootsie) Simons, Carlton (Butch) Fraser and former Trojan Charlie Fox, kick-off at 9 p.m.

Travel agents CTravel have agreed to donate part proceeds from raffle tickets that will be sold at the match towards DeShield?s medical costs.

?It?s going to cost him $25,000 for an eight-month rehabilitation programme and so our aim is to try and offset medical costs as much as we possibly can,? long-time friend and former team-mate Vince Minors sr told .

?Our aim is to organise various functions in hopes of raising the necessary amount of money.?

DeShields, who previously coached Hamilton Parish, has been employed as prison officer for the past 21 years.

Minors added: ?All we are asking fans to donate is a minimum of five dollars at the gate and food is going to be provided free of charge. This is definitely a worthy cause and we are expecting a very good turnout.?
