Twelve “Precious Gems” have completed a summer camp aimed at building their self-confidence and leadership skills.

The female students, aged between 11 and 14, took part in the Precious Gems programme run by Teen Services, and were commended at a completion ceremony by Nandi Outerbridge, the Junior Minister of Community, Culture and Sports.

Mrs Outerbridge said in a statement: “As young ladies you have the power to be anything that you want to be. But you must first believe that you can. What I have learnt is that you have to be yourself, love yourself and believe in yourself.

“You know everyone can tell you who they think you should be but only you know who you are. And you can make your dreams come true. But first it starts with believing in yourself no matter what others say or do.

“Congratulations, I know you will take what you’ve learnt and put it into practice. Use all that you have learnt to enhance the unique qualities that make you special.”

The Precious Gems programme was launched in August 2012. According to a press release, it aims to inspire and empower young girls between the ages of 11 to 14 to “recognise and understand their inner value, build self-confidence and improve self-esteem; as well as develop leadership skills”.

They also took part in art therapy to encourage their expression in creative manner, led by Richelle Richards, a teacher who uses art therapy to help young people cope with trauma.
