Man fined $300 for possessing cannabis
A Pembroke man has been fined $300 for having cannabis.
Omar Govia, 30, pleaded guilty in Magistrates Court this morning after being caught with 3.63 grams of the drug on November 27.
The court heard that at about 7.40pm, police officers intervened in an altercation at the junction of Angle Street and Brunswick Street, Pembroke.
After breaking up the quarrel, the officers told Govia to stay where he was.
But he walked to a wall and dropped a clear, plastic bag containing plant material on to the ground.
He was arrested on suspicion of possessing a controlled drug and taken to Hamilton Police Station.
In court, Govia said: “I just had a stressful day. It was probably just a little joint, not even that, just to take my mind off things.”
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo issued him a $300 fine.
