Chare Smith, the young Bermuda fast bowler, has been named to try out for an ICC Americas team that will compete in the West Indies Cricket Board’s Nagico Super 50 tournament in January.

Smith, who was named the outstanding bowler during last month’s ICC Americas Under-19 World Cup qualifying tournament in Bermuda, was selected in a Phase 1 squad of 83 players for the combine that will take place in Indianapolis from September 18 to 21.

A select number of players from that group will then advance to Phase 2 of the combine that will be held from September 24 to 27, after which an ICC Americas representative team will be selected to play in the tournament. The best performing players could then receive an opportunity to try out for places in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

An online application process was launched in June for Phase 1 of the combine, with eligible players encouraged to submit information and videos highlighting their performances.

Several hundred applications were received and assessed by a coaching panel coordinated by Tom Evans, the ICC Americas High Performance consultant, Richard Done, the ICC High Performance manager. That number was cut down to the 83 players who will travel to Indianapolis.

Six coaches from within the ICC Americas region were part of the panel and will also attend the combine to work alongside West Indies great Courtney Walsh and internationally renowned fielding coach Mike Young. The regional coaches include Derek Perera, Errol Barrow, Rupert Stephenson (Canada), Anand Tummala, Thiru (Kenny) Kumaran (USA) and Lorenzo Tucker (Bermuda).

In announcing the squad, Evans said: “We were encouraged by the amount of interest in the online process and the quality of applications received, while I’m sure the selected players will now be striving for a place in Phase 2.

“We’re looking forward to an exciting week in Indianapolis, and with the support of Courtney, Mike and a talented group of regional coaches, it should be a great experience for everyone involved.”

The ICC Americas region is part of the ICC’s development programme, which aims to grow and improve cricket within ICC’s 95 Associate and Affiliate Member countries. Players were selected for the combine from Canada, the United States, Cayman Islands and Argentina.

After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Bermuda scored 184 in 31.4 overs in their 40-over match, with Marcus Scotland leading the way with 53 not out. Jamar Stovell scored 34 and female player LeiLanni Nesbeth 27.

The Invitational Select scored 133 in reply with Nirobi Mills taking three for 19.

The squad play a 40-over match against Outer London Under-13s today at Bedes School.

On Tuesday, the youngsters enjoyed a tour to Lord’s, widely considered to be the home of cricket.
