While most of us would never dream of giving up a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning to pick up trash, that's exactly what the Green Team from Validus Re did towards the end of last month.

Twenty-five employees took to the West End to do their part for a Greener Bermuda and Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB).

"We felt that this was a perfect opportunity for our Green Team members to get involved in the community," Christopher Estwanik from the company explains.

"We cleaned up the area around Somerset Cricket Club, the surrounding Railway trail, and Scotts Hill Road."

A total of 64 bags of trash and recyclables were collected and some of the strangest items to picked up included a rollerblade, a soccer ball, cricket paddle, chair, and a Gatorade cooler.

Mr. Estwanik says the clean up was part of the company's expanding Green initiative: "Most recently, we ordered SIGG water bottles in order to cut down on the volume of bottled water consumed by our office."

He adds that Validus Re hope to make this an annual event in conjunction with KBB and when asked if he felt it was important for companies to get involved in environmental projects, he replied: "Obviously, it is very important for companies to get involved in Green Initiatives.

"The residents in the area were, for the most part, very happy to see us helping to clean up their neighbourhood. However, we think one of the overarching goals for KBB is to create a change in mindset. At the end of the day, if every Bermuda resident did their part to not litter in the first place, then these types of events would not be necessary.

"Obviously, we are a long ways off from that. The places that we actually found trash are indicative that someone went through more effort to dispose of their items illegally than if had they brought it to the end of their driveway or the nearest bin."
