Man shot on St. Monica's Road
A young man was shot on St Monica's Road last night.
The man who has not been named by Police, is currently at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital being treated by emergency room staff. Shots rang out on the street at approximately 7 p.m. yesterday.
The Royal Gazette understands that the young man was shot three times and was struck in the stomach and leg.
Last night he was in serious conditions.
Sniffer dogs and crime scene investigators collected evidence near Art-Mel's restaurant, with at least one bullet casing found on the scene.
The neighbourhood was quiet in the wake of the shooting last night though one young lady said she heard several loud noises that she thought were gun shots just before Police arrived.
Acting Minister of Home Affairs Zane DeSilva said last night: "I wish to add my voice to the many this evening in condemning this weekend's shooting which has left another young man in hospital.
"I want to publicly express my support for the members of the Bermuda Police Service (BPS), and I am confident that they will bring the person or persons responsible to justice.
"Finally, I think it's very critical to remind the public that their cooperation is vital in assisting the Police, and I encourage anyone with any knowledge about this incident to please contact the BPS to provide whatever information they have."
It was the fifth shooting to take place in 2010.
So far Perry Perkerin has been the only person to die this year as a result of the shootings. He was murdered on January third at Hamilton Workingmen's Club at 9.30 p.m.
In 2009 17 people were shot. In total five people have been shot dead in the last two years, with all the shootings taking place since May of last year.
The shooting took place days after the public and stakeholders in the North East Hamilton community were invited to meet with members of the Economic Empowerment Zones Agency, Crime Stoppers and the Bermuda Police Service to discuss safety and security issues.
A neighbourhood watch is soon going to be created.
Tracy Marshall, who lives in the area, said she was encouraged as 75 percent of the people at the meeting said they were willing to join the watch.
