Bermuda’s three-man team of Jarryd Dillas, Mark Phillips and William Haddrell are tied for 27th with six other teams after the opening round of the World Amateur Team Championships in Karuizawa, Japan, after shooting a two-under par 142 on the Irayama Course yesterday.

The best two scores counted as Phillips and Dillas both shot one-under 71s while Haddrell carded a 73.

Dillas had a rough start with a bogey on the par five before sinking his first birdie on the fifth. Dillas then shot back-to-back bogeys on six and seven before two more pars rounded out the front nine with a two-over 38. Birdies on 10 and 11 then brought Dillas back to even before he ended the round with a birdie three to finish one under.

Phillips started with a birdie on one before dropping a stroke with a bogey on two. He then shot birdies on three, five and six to go to three-under before a lost tee shot on the ninth resulted in a double-bogey six as he made the turn at one-under.

Phillips was steady throughout the back nine with nine straight pars, including an up-and-down from 20 yards on 18 to finish on 71.

Haddrell had bogeys on one and 15 before shooting his only birdie on 16.

Bermuda are tied with Brazil, China, Poland, Singapore, Slovenia and Thailand in the tournament which involves 69 countries.

Canada, Sweden and Switzerland lead with a ten-under 134 with Argentina one stroke back in fourth place.

Mathias Eggenberger of Switzerland, who played in the same group as Haddrell, carded a six-under par 66 to lead his team. He had six birdies, an eagle and two bogeys.

Bermuda’s players will again be paired with players from Switzerland and Qatar for today’s second round on the Oshitate Course.
