A walled-off area surrounding the roadside cenotaph monument by Christ Anglican Church, Devonshire, has taken two severe hits in six months.

However, the crashes have not put the church out of pocket, according to Canon James Francis.

“We find out who the culprits are and get them to repair the wall according to our specifications,” Canon Francis said.

Part of the western end of the stone wall was knocked down on January 29 when a Mitsubishi 4x4 came off the main road.

More seriously, the corner of a bus shelter was demolished on Monday morning after a taxi descending Christ Church Lane apparently lost control.

The cenotaph itself — a war memorial on a more modest scale than Hamilton’s — was not damaged in either incident.

Police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the latest crash or who might have information about the incident to contact them on 295-0011.
