Top eight seeds advance to quarters

Matches went according to play in the opening round of the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships yesterday at Mid Ocean Club on as the top eight men’s seeds advanced to today’s quarter-final round.Jarryd Dillas had a good start to the defence of his title when he comfortably beat 16th seed Richard Knight seven and five while number two seed Spencer Wideman also ended his match on the 13th hole, beating 15th seed Jose Luis Gerardo six and five. Not all the top seeds won so comfortably, however, as third seed Chris Brough had to go the distance before beating 14th seed Walter Jackson one up in the day’s closest match. Former cricketer Gary Brangman gave sixth seed Rod Forrest a scare before Forrest got past the 11th seeded Brangman two up.Fourth seed Nick Mansell, a beaten finalist in 2010 and 2011, kept his hopes alive of another spot in the final with a four and three win over Geoff Piggott.Susan Frith made it through to today’s quarter-finals when the eighth seed beat Gladys Chambaz four and three. The blustery conditions made things challenging for the players, though the rain held off long enough for all the matches to be completed. Today will see quarter-final and semi-final matches played and the conditions should remain challenging with significant wind and scattered showers. The four morning matches in the men’s division will Dillas taking on Scott Barnett, Mansell playing Cory DeSilva, Wideman meeting Ian Page and Brough playing Forrest. The women’s division also begins in earnest this morning with top seed Katrin Burnie, last year’s beaten finalist, taking on Chambaz, Ann Symonds meeting Sandy Hutchings, Linda Down playing Tracy Burgess and Ebonie Burgess meeting Wendy Salvia.Semi-final matches are scheduled to start at 11.44am.
