Big entry for Princess race
Princess road race this Sunday.
Organiser Newton Adcock said yesterday that 150 athletes had already registered to run the 7.2-mile course from the Hamilton Princess to the Southampton Princess.
The race will be the first since the two hotels were bought by the Canadian Pacific Group. Prizes for the top male and female runners in each of the three adult age groups -- 20-39, 40-49 and 50-plus -- will include a weekend for two staying at one of the two hotels, while there will also be prizes for juniors (under-20s).
Last year's winner Brett Forgesson is expected to defend his title, but women's champion Karen Adams will not be taking part.
Sunday's event starts at 9.30 a.m..
The race record was set in 1989 by David Swanston who ran the course in 36:08, while the record time for a Bermudian is 37:32, set by Kavin Smith, also in 1989. The women's record came a year earlier, when Bermuda's Sandra Mewett finished 41:32 in the first of her seven successive victories in the race.
Entry forms, which are available from Sportseller, New Winners Edge and The Pro Shop should be submitted by tomorrow at 5.00 p.m. Otherwise late entries can be submitted up to 30 minutes before the race start at a cost of $20.
LOCAL PAIR EXCEL AT SEMINAR ATH AWD Local pair excel at seminar National track and field coach Gerry Swan and sprinter/jumper Devon Bean both received awards when they took part in a week-long high-level athletics seminar in Selinas, Puerto Rico recently.
The seminar was staged by the International Amateur Athletic Federation at one of their regional development centres.
Some 30 coaches and athletes of horizontal jumps (long jump and triple jump) and multi events, such as decathlon, attended the course.
At the end, Swan was voted most outstanding coach and Bean the most outstanding athlete in the horizontal jumps seminar.
"It was a high level seminar which involved practical sessions to help athletes improve their technique and become more knowledgeable to those things that affect their training,'' said Swan.
"They talked about nutrition and diet and different things that could be incorporated into training. I thought it was a good seminar and Devon got good feedback from it which I think will help him.'' Athletes and coaches from 14 countries in the North American, Central American and Caribbean region -- the US, Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Venezuela, St. Kitts and Cayman Islands -- took part.
Bean is a student at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
MATCHPLAY EXCITEMENT GLF Matchplay excitement Young golfers brushed aside the windy conditions at Riddell's Bay yesterday to produce some exciting matches in the first round of the Junior Amateur Matchplay Championships.
In the 15-17 age group Chris Brough edged Jennifer Spurling two and one and Mark Robinson was taken to the 20th hole before defeating Scott Roy.
Ted Terceira defeated Oliver Pitcher one up and Fraser Hunt was extended by Eric West before finally winning two and one.
In the championship flight of the 13-14 division, David Smith defeated Stephen McGuinness seven and six, Ryan Marshall ousted Tim Burland three and two, Aaron James cruised to an eight and six victory over Thomas Edwards and Jarryd Dillas was a comfortable winner over David Boyce, five and four.
In the championship flight of the 12 and under division, Andy Boyce defeated Shane Kelly six and four, Jamie MacMillan defeated Michael Watts eight and seven, Sean Harlington ousted Daniel Ezekiel six and five and Tyler Marshall got by Andrew Osborne four and three.
COLLEGE VISITORS UNBEATEN BAS College visitors unbeaten Mercy College women's basketball team won the first two matches of their Bermuda tour at Bermuda College gym over the Christmas holiday, beating the college team 53-34 and league champions Air Netts 70-30 on Sunday.
Melissa Thomas scored 13 points for Mercy in the opening match while Katie Palokangas had eight. For Bermuda College Gina Christopher scored 14 points and Wenda Godfrey nine. Mercy led 25-14 at the half.
A massive 40 points separated Mercy and Air Netts as Laurie Swanson scored 18 points and Violeta Skrelja nine while Tashae Thompson (8) and Marisa Wainwright (6) were the top scorers for Netts who trailed 36-10 at the half.
Mercy were scheduled to wrap up their three-match tour against a Bermuda Select last night.
DUDLEY EVE WASH-OUT SOC Dudley Eve wash-out Wolves and North Village will tonight try again to play their Dudley Eve Trophy semi-final, after the fixture was postponed last night because of a flooded pitch.
The match, with a place in the two-legged final against Dandy Town at stake, will be played at St. John's Field, kick-off 9.00 p.m., and will follow the Under-21 Knockout semi-final, which starts at 7.00.
