Bermuda's Under-14 rugby team notched up a second win over the visiting team from English school Yardley this past weekend.

It was clear that the English schoolboys had given the local side a useful lesson in their first encounter when the tourists played quality controlled rugby but were somewhat overpowered and outpaced by the locals.

With the benefits of playing against quality opposition evident, Bermuda showed what they had learned, often setting up second and third phase ball before releasing their speed.

The home side opened the scoring with Micah Perozzi shaking off tackles to cross the line early in the first half. This was followed by a fine solo effort by Kevin Fraser which saw him score under the posts. But strong defence by Yardley prevented any further tries in the first half, despite Bermuda repeatedly knocking on the door.

The second half scoring was opened by Graham Cooke who picked up from the base of a ruck and dove over the line. Perozzi then broke through the centres to score his second try of the day.

Despite some probing runs by wingers Calum Maule and Rory Crofts, the Yardley defenders again showed their mettle, and Bermuda was stopped short on a number of occasions.

However, moments before the final whistle from a strong scrummage platform Bermuda's backs spun the ball wide and Jahcari Francis carried three Yardley defenders across the line but was unable to ground the ball.

Never giving up, Bermuda fed the ball back and an opportunistic Cooke drove over for his second try at the whistle.

With two conversions from Daniel Nash, that left the score 29 - 0, although the score did not do justice to the standard of play of the visitors.

The next match that the team plays will be in two weeks' time when the U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s all travel to Cayman to compete for the Conyers Youth Cup. The senior national team will also be travelling at the same time to play a full IRB sanctioned international against Cayman.
