WOW migrating services to lower frequency

Wireless subscription TV provider WOW will next month change the bandwidth frequency that it uses to deliver services to its customers.

It will mean installing new equipment for customers who have been using Topfield receivers, and replacing antennas at all customer premises with a lower profile version.

The company said it was doing “very well” in its efforts to contact customers with Topfield receivers to notify them of the required change of equipment.

World on Wireless Ltd (WOW) was granted a licence for TV broadcasts in the UHF 38-69 range in 2003. However, the subsequent increasing demand by cellphone companies for radio wavelengths in the 700Mhz group led the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda to advise WOW that it wished to reallocate the majority of those frequencies to the cellphone industry.

WOW has agreed to relinquish the frequencies and migrate its services to UHF 21-50, a lower level on the ultra-high frequency spectrum.

The company expects to receive and complete installation of new transmission equipment in time of the change next month. It is asking customers with Topfield receivers to contact its sales office to arrange for equipment replacements as soon as possible.

“We are happy to comply with the RA’s request to move to an alternative spectrum and have been working at contacting as many customers as we can to complete the Topfield receiver replacement. At this point we are doing very well,” said Dwight Denbrook, WOW’s vice president of operations.

“At this point we are doing very well. Along with the receiver exchange we will be replacing antennas at all customer premises with a new, more low profile type.”

The new antennas are on Island, and the company expects to start the replacement programme tomorrow.
