Rego expects Duprier to go on the attack

Nikki Bascome’s preparations for his welterweight showdown with Claudele Duprier have gone fairly smoothly, according to the professional boxer’s trainer Allen “Forty” Rego.

The orthodox fighter puts his unblemished record on the line against his Haitian born opponent at tomorrow night’s Extreme Entertainment Knock Out Night that has been moved from Dockyard to Bermuda College Gym due to inclement weather in the forecast.

Having fought several Haitian boxers during his own career, Rego has a good idea of what to expect from Duprier, who is making his professional debut against Bermuda’s top boxer.

“I have fought three Haitians so I know how they are,” Rego said. “They are commers; they try to be very forceful so it’s up to you to go with them or work off them.”

Bascome, whose record stands at 2-0, also has experience fighting against Haitian fighters as well as fighters from Duprier’s Miami gym.

The former Platinun Gloves and Dynamic Fighting Championship champion has been working hard in preparation for his second straight bout on home soil following his unanimous points victory against Canadian Joe Marchand-Tipping last November.

“Nikki is looking really good and his mind is in a good place,” Rego said. “The preparations have been going along all right. All of my coaches have jumped in and all worked really hard to prepare Nikki.”

Plans to have Bascome take part in a training camp in Florida failed to materialise, leaving the fighter no other option but to prepare at home.

“We are working with what we have here and Nikki is doing really good,” Rego said. “We do not have the amount of sparring partners that I would have preferred, but I really appreciate the guys here that are giving their all to work with Nikki, which is really important.”

Rego said moving the fight indoors is “no big deal”.

“You can put it on the moon or in a phone booth ... the fight will be the same,” he said. “I was looking forward to being outside, but the weather is not looking good.”

The bout between Bascome and Duprier is part of a main event double-header also featuring American women’s boxers Kirunis Dulei and Lena Taylor, who is a four-times national champion. The undercard will feature several of the Island’s top amateurs.
