A Bermudian landscape architect has signed up with the Island-based arm of an international firm.

Jennifer Davidson switched from a career in business and banking to study landscape architecture at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She has now joined Hamilton-based architectural firm OBM International.

“I believe landscape architecture plays an important role in the design, planning and management of outdoor experiences,” she said.

“Plants are traditionally associated with creating these experiences, but landscape architecture also includes shaping the land and landscaping.”

She added: “This discipline contributes to creating sustainable environments and can positively benefit our physical and mental health.”

Ms Davidson said that landscape architecture can also add value to homes, as well as creating outside living space.

Ms Davidson, who is also a skilled botanical artist, first graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Art History and Business Administration from Boston University and worked for Bank of Bermuda, later HSBC, rising to become assistant manager in customer relations.

She will be joined at OBM International by fellow-Bermudian Kiarrah Rogers, who has just finished her second year of a four-year programme in landscape architecture at Guelph University in Canada. She is in her second stint as a summer intern at the firm.

Ms Rogers said: “Landscape architecture isn’t just about beautifying a space, it’s about solving problems with practical solutions.

“Storm water run-off, soil erosion, microclimates and water and air quality are all issues that can be addressed with a thoughtful landscape.”

OBM regional director Colin Campbell said: “Our new team members will help us provide a wider breadth of services and offer greater value to our conscientious clients.
